Rhino swept away by floods reaches Susta from Chitwan

A rhino caught in floods from Chitwan National Park and its buffer zone has reached Susta in Nawalparasi via the Narayani river.

The rhino, about five years old, was spotted this morning in Susta Rural Municipality-4. Avinash Thapamagar, information officer of the national park, said monitoring began as soon as the information was received.

He said the rhino's location is being tracked and preparations are underway to rescue and bring it back. Since reaching Susta requires using an Indian route, he said the rhino would need to be tranquilised with a dart and brought back by boat or via an Indian road.

The floods in the Narayani on Saturday and Sunday swept the rhino from the riverside area. It is estimated that the floods may have carried other rhinos and wildlife into India as well.

Previously, in the floods of the Rapti and Narayani on Saun 28, 2074 BS, many rhinos had crossed via Susta into India. According to the national park, there are about 700 rhinos in Chitwan.
