26 unmanaged families in Jhapa's Buddhashanti get land certificates after 36 years

Twenty-six families who had been living in an unmanaged settlement in Buddhashanti Rural Municipality-4 in Jhapa have received land ownership certificates in their own names after around 36 years.

The District Land Problem Resolution Committee, Jhapa, handed over the certificates to the families. Land ownership certificates are commonly known as lalpurja.

According to the committee, these families had been living in the same area since Bikram Sambat 2047. For this long period, legal ownership of the land had not been registered in their names. With the certificates, they have now legally become landowners.

According to the committee, some of the distributed land has been allocated for housing and some for farming.

Resolving the problems of landless Dalits, squatters and unmanaged settlers is a government priority. Officials said the distribution of lalpurja is being made more effective with the goal of making these groups legal landowners in the long term.
