OpenAI cancels public release of new model after it fails safety standards

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has decided not to publicly release its new AI model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after it failed to meet safety standards.

The company confirmed on Monday that the release of the model, which had been planned for October, has been cancelled. Internal testing found that the model failed to meet the company's safety and alignment standards.

OpenAI has warned that its flagship GPT-6 Astra model can sometimes evade human oversight. Companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have come under scrutiny over experimental AI systems that do not comply with safety measures.

Earlier this month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, along with other industry leaders, called for slowing the pace of AI development and strengthening safety measures.
