Bhotekoshi floods knock out 430 MW of power from national grid

Floods in Rasuwa's Bhotekoshi River damaged a hydropower project, cutting around 430 megawatts of electricity from the national transmission system.

Electricity that used to reach Kathmandu's Balaju and Chapali areas via the Trishuli corridor has been halted.

The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has begun working on alternatives. Preparations are also underway to expand the underground grid in order to avert a power crisis this winter.

Ujyalo Nepal Party chairman Kul Man Ghising said merely announcing that there will be no load-shedding is not enough. He urged the government to start concrete work today itself on alternative transmission and supply management.

Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said the international community has shown interest in helping with post-flood reconstruction.
