Trump announces deal to buy Russian diesel

US President Donald Trump has announced a deal to purchase large quantities of diesel from Russia.
The announcement, made in Washington, comes as fuel prices continue to rise in the American market. Trump, who has faced strong pressure to bring down fuel costs, said the agreement was reached to help control rising global prices.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whose country continues to face Russian aggression, has strongly objected to the decision. European countries have expressed concern that the deal will make Russian President Vladimir Putin more powerful.
The US move comes amid Western sanctions imposed on Russian fuel following the war in Ukraine.
