Kaligandaki flood sweeps away Mirmi bridge

Floodwaters in the Kaligandaki River have swept away the concrete Mirmi bridge connecting Syangja and Gulmi.

The bridge, located downstream from the Mirmi dam site, connected Harmichaur in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-1, Gulmi, with Mirmi in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-7, Syangja. Road links between the two districts have been cut off since the bridge was swept away.

After the river's flow increased sharply, the Kaligandaki 'A' Hydropower Project halted power generation.

Dozens of houses in Warirbeni, Farse and Setibeni bazaars in Parbat have been affected by the flood, with Setibeni bazaar under water. According to Jaljala ward chair Hirbikash GC, around two dozen houses have been swept away in the Farse area. Three settlements in Parbat have been displaced.

Rain is forecast to continue throughout the day today across the western region.
