Heavy rain in west until Sunday, weather to improve from Monday

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said the effect of heavy rain will continue in western Nepal until Sunday, and weather across the country will improve from Monday.

Although the low-pressure system over India is weakening and moving toward Uttar Pradesh, its effect is more pronounced in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim. According to the department, heavy to very heavy rain is possible at a few places in these provinces this afternoon and night. Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places in Koshi and Bagmati today, and extremely heavy rain is possible tonight at one or two places in Lumbini and Sudurpashchim.

There is a 100 percent chance of rain today in Birendranagar, Nepalgunj and Pokhara. Pokhara's maximum temperature is expected to be 19 to 21 degrees Celsius, and Nepalgunj's 21 to 23 degrees Celsius. Kathmandu is forecast to have a 60 percent chance of moderate rain, with a maximum temperature of 19 to 21 degrees Celsius.

Rain is decreasing in the eastern region, with a 40 percent chance of rain in Biratnagar and Janakpur. Gusty winds may blow in the Tarai and some hilly areas.

As the risk of landslides in hilly areas and floods in the Tarai and low-lying areas remains high, meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, saying the rain could also affect road transport.
