Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Jagdish Khareel has expressed a wish to become an honorary member of the Jyapu society. Speaking at a formal program organized by the society in Lalitpur, he said he would like to be recognized as "Jagdish Khareel Newar."

He said he had placed the proposal before the chairperson and office-bearers, to be accepted only if permitted by the society's constitution, rules and traditions. Khareel made clear that he does not want any rights and seeks membership only to fulfill duties. He said he wants the society to have the right to criticize him if he fails to work.

He also said he has no desire to become the chairperson of the society. Expressing an old emotional bond with Newari art and culture, he paid respect to local elders including Krishna Lal Maharjan and Prem Bahadur Maharjan. He said his relationship with the Jyapu elders is not new.

Calling Lalitpur his karmabhumi, or field of work, he said he would make every effort to protect its art, culture and intangible heritage. He said he would play an active role in parliament for Lalitpur's development and heritage conservation.

Khareel also pledged to advance a bill on intangible heritage in the upcoming winter session of parliament. According to him, community participation must be mandatory in heritage conservation.
