Rain intensifying in Sudurpashchim, four districts at high risk, Kanchanpur on standby

As the low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal moves westward, rainfall in Sudurpashchim Province is forecast to increase from Friday night, with four districts of the province at high risk.

According to Chief Engineer Sanjay Kumar Saha of the Hydrology and Meteorology Office in Attariya, rainfall is expected to increase further from Saturday. He said additional caution is needed as heavy rain in parts of the province could raise the risk of floods, landslides and road blockages.

According to the office, moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at many places across the mountain, hill and Tarai regions, with very heavy rainfall possible at one or two places. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in Sudurpashchim on Saturday.

According to Kanchanpur Chief District Officer Madan Koirala, the district administration, together with local units and security agencies, has stepped up monitoring of risk-prone areas. Riverbanks and flood-prone zones have been placed under special watch, and personnel are on standby for rescue and relief.

The public is being informed of risks through media, social networks and loudspeaker announcements, and security agencies have kept rescue teams and necessary equipment ready.
