Parliamentary sub-committee formed to curb irregularities in Dashain-Tihar travel

The House of Representatives' Infrastructure Development Committee has formed a special sub-committee to curb irregularities in public transport during Dashain, Tihar and Chhath. The decision was made under Rule 185 of the Rules of Procedure, 2083, at a meeting of the committee.

Dhanendra Karki has been named coordinator of the sub-committee. Asha Jha, Purna Prasad Limbu and Manju Bhusal are members, with one more member to be appointed later.

The sub-committee will study overcrowding, overcharging of fares, and irregularities in ticket sales during the festivals. Monitoring the status of advance ticket booking and whether the fixed fare rates are being implemented will be among its priorities.

It will also offer policy and practical suggestions on the availability of vehicles and route management based on passenger demand. On road safety, it will examine efforts to control overloading of passengers, speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The sub-committee will also study driver management and driver safety on long-distance routes. It will conduct on-site monitoring of landslides, road maintenance, under-construction roads and possible traffic jams on major highways and suggest solutions.

For this, it will coordinate with the Department of Transport Management, Traffic Police, District Administration Offices, local governments and transport entrepreneurs. Within three months of starting work, the sub-committee must submit a report with its study and monitoring findings, along with suggestions, to the main committee.
