Government apologises for order to evict resident doctors from hostel

The government has apologised for the order issued to resident doctors at National Medical College in Birgunj directing them to vacate their hostel.
At a discussion at the Ministry of Education and Sports on Thursday, Education Minister's adviser Shailendra Jha apologised on behalf of the government. The college had directed first-year doctors to vacate the hostel and quarters and hand over college property within 12 hours.
Jha said the order had been issued in a fit of emotion and reflected personal ego. He said it was inhumane to force doctors out of their lodging during sensitive weather. He said the ministry was taking the matter seriously and committed to creating a conducive study environment soon.
More than 40 first-year resident doctors, who have been protesting for 24 days, came to the ministry at Singha Durbar. They raised problems in their academic and professional lives before senior ministry officials, complaining of excessive pressure from the college administration and a lack of a learning-friendly environment.
The doctors have demanded that the college ensure a calm and dignified environment so they can return to their studies without obstruction.
