Nepali Congress convention: Nominations close, 11 candidates for general secretary

Nomination registration for various office-bearer posts at the 15th convention of the Nepali Congress was completed on Tuesday. The deadline for submitting nominations was set at 7 pm.

For the post of president, party President Gagan Kumar Thapa, Shyam Krishna Khadgi and Kishor Singh Rathaur have filed candidacies. Only Bishwa Prakash Sharma has been nominated for senior vice president and only Pushpa Bhusal for women's vice president, so they have been elected unopposed.

For the post of vice president, nine candidates, including Dr Chandra Bhandari, have filed in the open category, and five, including Jeevan Pariyar, in the inclusive category. Five candidates from Gandaki Province alone, including Chief Minister Surendraraj Pandey and Dhanraj Gurung, are running for vice president.

Eleven candidates have filed for general secretary. For the first time, the party has amended its constitution to reserve one general secretary post for women, and three women leaders have filed nominations under this provision. Several candidates are also in the running for joint general secretary.

According to the final voter list published by the Election Commission, there are 7,255 delegate voters at the convention.
