Sports minister says investment in sports must rise for international results

Education and Sports Minister Sasmita Pokharel has said achieving expected results in major competitions like the Asian Games requires long-term investment starting from the grassroots level.

Pokharel, who is also the government spokesperson, expressed this view at a press conference called in Kathmandu on Tuesday to announce Cabinet decisions. She said Nepal's weak performance on international stages stems from insufficient and ineffective investment at the grassroots level in the past.

Minister Pokharel said long-term planning is necessary, since investment made today will not yield medals tomorrow. At the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, Nepal has so far won only two bronze medals, from Tenzing Sherpa in karate and the women's kabaddi team.

The government had begun preparations four years ago with a target of winning double-digit medals, including gold. Minister Pokharel said an understanding has been reached between the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Urban Development for sports infrastructure.

Under this, there are plans to build covered halls, cricket and football stadiums and other infrastructure at 27 locations across the country.
