Beni-Jomsom-Korala road suffers around Rs 1 billion in damage, repair to cost Rs 3-4 billion

Initial estimates suggest that the strategically important Beni-Jomsom-Korala road, which connects Nepal with China and India, has suffered damage to physical structures worth about Rs 1 billion due to the recent monsoon disaster. Floods and landslides have badly damaged various structures along the road, which connects to the Korala border point with China.
According to Chief Tejaswi Sharma, floods in the Kaligandaki River swept away the road at 10 locations and damaged it with landslides at another 50 locations. The damage to various sections of the road occurred following the disaster that began on Asoj 8.
Reconstruction of the damaged road is estimated to cost Rs 3 to 4 billion. The Rs 1 billion figure given so far is only a preliminary damage estimate.
The road, which connects both China and India, is considered strategically important. Details of the damage caused to its various structures by the monsoon floods and landslides have been made public on the basis of this initial assessment.
