The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has directed internet service providers to transparently publish all the packages, speeds and tariff rates they offer.

The authority has warned of strict action under the law against providers that conceal approved rates, change packages without permission, or raise prices arbitrarily. According to a statement issued by NTA assistant spokesperson Dr. Pradip Paudyal, complaints have been received that some providers have not made their approved rates and package details public.

The authority has also received complaints that providers have changed old packages and raised prices without prior approval, putting customers at a disadvantage. Section 42 of the Telecommunications Act, 2053 BS requires service providers to get their tariffs mandatorily approved by the authority and to inform the public.

Some service providers have announced internet rate hikes citing their Telecommunication Service Charge (TSC) tax liability. The Large Taxpayers Office has questioned some providers for showing a separate maintenance charge on monthly bills to reduce their TSC calculation.
