Flood washes away approach road of Kaligandaki bridge linking Nawalparasi and Tanahun

A flood in the Kaligandaki river has washed away the approach road of a motorable bridge connecting Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta East) and Tanahun, fully blocking the road.

The river, swollen by continuous rainfall, has eroded the approach road and even the foundation on the Nawalpur side of the bridge. According to information officer Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Pandit of the District Police Office, Nawalparasi, the Gandaki Province road linking Dedhgaun in Baudikali Rural Municipality-2 and Ghiring Rural Municipality in Tanahun has been cut off.

Not only vehicles but also pedestrians are currently unable to cross the bridge. This road, which connects Dedhgaun to Pokhara via Bhimad in Tanahun, is the shortest route between the provincial capital Pokhara and Nawalpur. Local residents had been using this road for daily travel to Syangja, Pokhara, Tanahun, Nawalpur and Palpa.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, today, Sunday, some places in the mountainous and hilly areas of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces may see moderate rain with thunder and lightning, with heavy rain also possible at one or two places in the mountainous and hilly areas of both provinces. The department's forecast also indicates rain at some places in the Tarai of Lumbini and a few places in the Tarai of Gandaki. The department said there is an 80 percent chance of rain in Pokhara.
