Seven problem tigers in Bardiya, no more room in pens

Seven tigers that caused human-wildlife conflict in areas around the national parks of Banke, Bardiya and Chitwan have been captured and are being kept at Bardiya National Park. According to the park, five of the seven are male tigers and two are female.

Park conservation officer Mahesh Neupane said the tigers are being held in pens at Ramuwapur and Thakurdwara in Bardiya. He said tigers aged 2 to 12 years, including cubs, have been kept in various pens in Bardiya since 2077 BS.

According to Ajit Tumbahangphe, senior conservation officer with the National Trust for Nature Conservation's Bardiya Conservation Program, these tigers were relocated from Banke, Bardiya and Chitwan. He said the rescued wildlife also includes leopards.

The number of tigers held in pens following such conflicts has now reached about 20. Tumbahangphe said the enclosures are full, leading to a shortage of space for newly rescued tigers.
