Vegetable prices fall in Kathmandu Valley as supply rises after Dashain

Prices of green vegetables have fallen in Kathmandu Valley as supply in the market has increased following Dashain.
Over the past two days, prices of most vegetables have dropped by nearly 46 percent per kilogram. Carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, butter beans, bitter gourd, mustard greens, okra, pointed gourd, green pumpkin and cucumber, among others, have become cheaper.
According to the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Development Committee, tomatoes at the Kalimati wholesale market have fallen to around Rs 65 per kg and dried onions to around Rs 87.
The committee says carrots are now around Rs 110 per kg and cabbage around Rs 38. Cauliflower has fallen to around Rs 45, mustard greens to around Rs 40 and bitter gourd to around Rs 75.
Green peas, which cost around Rs 225 per kg two days ago, have now fallen to around Rs 130, a drop of about Rs 95 per kg in just two days.
Traders had raised vegetable prices during Dashain, citing reduced supply. Committee information officer Vidur Prasad Acharya said prices have fallen because supply now exceeds demand.
He said demand may be low because many consumers who went to their home villages to celebrate Dashain have not yet returned. He added that the inflow of vegetables into the market is continuing to rise.
