Discounted food sales begin ahead of festival season

With Dashain, Tihar and Chhath approaching, Salt Trading Corporation's Makwanpur office has started selling food grains at discounted prices.

Office chief Madhusudan Adhikari said the office is selling salt, sugar, cooking oil and flour at discounted rates in line with government directives. According to him, compared to market prices, sugar is discounted by Rs 5 per kg, salt by Rs 2, flour by Rs 7, and oil by Rs 7 per litre.

To ensure equitable distribution, each person is allowed 6 packets of salt, 6 kg of sugar, 5 litres of oil and 5 kg of flour. The office said the sale will continue until Tihar.

Meanwhile, both the Food Management and Trading Company and Salt Trading Corporation said they have sufficient stock of essential food items for the festival season. According to company information officer Madhav Mishra, demand for rice, sugar and cooking oil is currently high at the discount outlets.

He said demand for sugar has risen somewhat compared to last year, while demand for other items remains normal. He said that since stocks are sufficient, there should be no immediate supply problems, and stock will be redistributed as needed if demand rises at any sales center.
