Protests against rising cost of living flare up again in France, about 1,000 detained

Protests took place across France on Saturday against rising costs of living, cuts to public services, a lack of budget for education, and economic inequality. During the protests, police detained about 1,000 people. Clashes broke out between protesters and police in Paris and other cities, and tear gas was fired on the streets.
According to the government, 410,000 people took part in Saturday's protests nationwide. 70,000 police personnel were deployed for security. Some rallies were banned. Many shops and Paris metro stations were also closed.
Last week's protests had seen the worst urban violence in years. A curfew was imposed for a few days afterward. Saturday's protests, which came after the curfew, also turned intense.
The movement began last month with a small protest by students in the outskirts of Paris against the condition of their school. It then grew into a nationwide movement against the government's economic policy, increasing pressure on President Emmanuel Macron.
