A large demonstration took place in Madrid, the Spanish capital, on Saturday demanding protection of the state pension system. According to Madrid authorities, around 250,000 people took part in the protest, AFP reported.

Protesters held a peaceful march from Atocha railway station to the main shopping street, Gran Via. Most carried banners calling for the protection and guarantee of pensions.

The sustainability of pensions and the rising cost of living have become key issues ahead of next month's parliamentary election. Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has accused the right-wing opposition of trying to weaken pension increases linked to inflation.

Juan Fernandez, a 38-year-old government employee from the southern city of Seville, said there was uncertainty about whether he would receive a pension in the future.
