FNJ objects to MP Rajiv Khatri's remarks, demands apology and removal from record

The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has objected to remarks made by Rastriya Swatantra Party House of Representatives member Rajiv Khatri and demanded that he apologize immediately.
At the House of Representatives meeting held on Wednesday, Asoj 14, Khatri had questioned whether those threatening the Press Council were journalists or goons. He had also said that no one should be allowed to become a 'bull of Asan' under the guise of journalism.
Khatri had further accused federation leaders of being mired in party politics and speaking the language of goons.
In a statement issued on Thursday, FNJ General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal called the remarks indecent, undignified, anarchic and anti-press. The federation expressed regret, saying Khatri had insulted the entire journalism sector without understanding the facts.
The federation said such remarks were even more objectionable coming from a lawmaker who is himself a former journalist. It has demanded that the Speaker remove the controversial remarks from the House of Representatives record.
The federation has also demanded action against lawmakers who make objectionable remarks against the press and threaten journalists. Journalists in Bhaktapur have already announced they will boycott an interaction programme scheduled by Khatri for Friday. The federation has also urged Khatri to respect constitutional rights and behave responsibly toward the press.
