114.8mm rain in 24 hours in Humla's Simikot breaks decades-old record

Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla, has recorded 114.8mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. According to Nepal Live and Onlinekhabar, this rainfall broke a 48-year-old record for the area. Nepal Press, however, has called it the heaviest rainfall in 46 years.

As the rain-bearing system shifted westward, heavy rainfall has occurred in various districts of Karnali Province. Simikot, at an altitude of 2,993 meters above sea level, has previously recorded rainfall events exceeding 90mm.

According to records, Simikot recorded 98mm of rainfall on January 3, 2015, and 92.8mm on June 9, 2000. The rainfall of the past 24 hours exceeds both of these records.

The system, which has been bringing continuous rainfall for three days, is now concentrated in the central and western parts of the country. This has caused rivers in various districts to swell, leading to incidents of flooding and landslides.
