The Nepal Telecommunications Authority has clarified that internet service charges have not increased and has warned of action against service providers that charge more than the approved rate.

The authority issued the clarification after media reports claimed charges had gone up. According to the authority, no internet or email service provider has proposed a fee increase, nor has the authority approved any.

Under its directive, providers must submit a proposal for prior approval, specifying the date from which a new rate would take effect. The authority said approved rates must be made public and providers cannot run unauthorized services in a way that harms consumers.

It stated that violators would face action under the Telecommunications Act and Regulations. The authority has urged consumers to file complaints if any provider is found charging more than approved or running illegal services, saying charges levied by providers must be fair and reasonable.
