Chair of Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster special committee to be picked on Asoj 14

The chairperson of the parliamentary special committee on the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster and Himalayan climate change will be elected on Wednesday, Asoj 14.

At Monday's House of Representatives meeting, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire informed the House that the election would be held under Rule 176 of the House of Representatives Regulations at 2 pm that day.

The House of Representatives had formed this 15-member committee at its meeting on Asoj 5. The committee was formed after the flood in Bhotekoshi in Rasuwa on Bhadra 10 caused major physical damage in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and other districts.

Members of the committee include lawmakers Achyut Lamichhane, Anushka Shrestha, Dhruba Raj Rai, Nisha Dangi, Mingma Gyalbu Sherpa and Sujata Tamang, among others. The committee's term has been set at three months, with a provision to extend it if necessary.

The committee will study and monitor the causes, effects and damage of the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster. As per its mandate, it will also conduct a scientific, evidence-based study of the origin of the disaster, its sequence of events, immediate causes and the factors that increased the risk. The committee will also examine the impact of climate change in the Himalayan region and its possible link to the disaster. It has also been given responsibility for preparing a policy basis for reducing climate-related disasters.
