Gagan Kumar Thapa elected Nepali Congress president with 93.88 percent votes

Gagan Kumar Thapa has been elected president of Nepali Congress. Thapa received 6,584 votes (93.88 percent) in the election held under the party's 15th General Convention. He has been elected president for the next four-year term.
Shyam Krishna Khadgi, who contested against Thapa for the president's post, received 375 votes. A total of 39 votes were invalidated in the presidential race.
Voting under the general convention took place on Friday. Vote counting for the president's post was held at the National Hall. Counting was briefly affected after it suddenly started raining in Kathmandu. Once the weather improved, all ballot boxes kept in the open stage were safely brought into the hall. Counting began with Bagmati and Sudurpashchim provinces and concluded on Saturday morning.
Vote counting for other office-bearer posts besides the president is still pending. Ballot boxes for those posts have been taken to Sanepa, where counting is expected to begin from this afternoon.
