Jhapa movement veteran and former lawmaker Ghanendra Basnet passes away

Ghanendra Basnet, a veteran of the Jhapa movement and a leftist leader, has passed away. Basnet, who had been suffering from cancer, died on Wednesday evening during treatment at Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital.
Basnet was a leader long active in Nepal's communist movement. He was among the leaders involved in the Nakkhu jailbreak.
He was elected to the House of Representatives twice from the CPN-UML. Basnet was elected from Sankhuwasabha on behalf of the UML in 2048 BS.
CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli expressed grief over his demise and paid tribute to him. Oli paid his tribute via Facebook on Wednesday.
