India and Japan trade blame over delays in Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project

India and Japan have begun publicly trading accusations over delays in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train project. The corridor, a joint investment of the two countries, has also seen disputes over technical agreements and the procurement process.
Former Japanese Minister of Justice Hideki Makihara has accused India of being entirely responsible for the delay. He has also claimed that Indian negotiators repeatedly changed their stance.
The project is seen as a symbol of strategic partnership between the two countries, so such open criticism is being viewed as unusual.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has rejected the claim outright. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described Makihara's remarks as a personal opinion.
