Trump ready to ease Iran sanctions for concrete nuclear proposal, Russia urges NPT compliance

US President Donald Trump is ready to ease economic sanctions on Iran and release frozen funds if Iran puts forward a concrete proposal on its nuclear program, US officials have said.

The talks being held through mediators are positive, but according to the officials, no agreement will be reached until the nuclear issue is resolved.

On the US side, the talks were being led by special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump told US media outlet Axios on Sunday that he expects further talks with Iran this week. According to officials, although Iran has signaled some flexibility, the two sides have not yet agreed on a timeline for commitments.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Monday in New York that there had been further contact with the US through Qatari mediators.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Iran should not withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which bars Iran from making or acquiring nuclear weapons.

Iranian parliament deputy speaker Ali Nikzad said Tuesday that parliament would consider a three-phase plan to leave the treaty. He also said there was no trust in the International Atomic Energy Agency and its director general.
