Kaligandaki flood hits Majhi settlement in Kushma

A major flood in the Kaligandaki river damaged the Majhi settlement at Maldhunga in Kushma Municipality-1, Parbat, on Sunday.

The flood swept away about half a dozen huts and structures, including a pig farm, in the settlement.

After three days of continuous rain, police had been using loudspeakers to urge locals to move to safe places, and residents fled to safety when water entered early in the morning.

In Farse, Jaljala Rural Municipality-8, also in Parbat, 66 houses alone were swept away by the flood.

Rain that began Thursday evening intensified further from Saturday morning.

According to the local administration and residents, this is the biggest flood in the Kaligandaki in the past 30 years.

Damage has occurred at Anandbagar and Thakne Bagar in Beni Municipality-1, Myagdi, with the Thakne Bagar settlement submerged.

Transport links with Mustang have been cut after the Beni-Jomsom road collapsed in several places.

In Annapurna Rural Municipality-6, electricity poles were swept away at Pokharebagar, and the bridge connecting Pokharebagar and Nauli Bagar was washed away.

A section of the concrete embankment built to protect Beni Bazar has also collapsed.

Traffic has come to a halt after a landslide occurred near the foundation of the Maldhunga bridge connecting Baglung and Parbat.

Setibeni Bazar, the confluence point of Syangja, Parbat and Gulmi, has also been submerged.
