Kathmandu Metropolitan City has launched a bike ambulance service from Friday to reach patients faster in narrow lanes and traffic-congested areas.

Acting chief of the metropolis, Sunita Dangol, said callers requesting an ambulance on number 102 will be sent a bike ambulance as needed.

The service will be deployed to provide immediate primary care to patients at intersections and lanes that four-wheeled ambulances cannot reach.

Dangol said that although Kathmandu has enough ambulances, traffic jams and geographical conditions make it difficult to deliver timely service.

The free 102 service, run by the metropolis in partnership with Nepal Ambulance Service, has already been extended to other local units in the Valley.

Dangol shared this information at a presentation programme of 13 hospitals and health institutions that operate with the metropolis's grants and cooperation.

According to her, the metropolis has been providing grants to hospitals and health institutions.

A fund has also been set up in Kirtipur to cover treatment costs for burn patients.
