Online fraud using celebrity photos: police list 19 cyber fraud methods

Online fraud is spreading on social media through posts using photos of well-known celebrities and entrepreneurs, luring people with promises of quick, large earnings. Posts and videos claiming earnings of thousands of rupees within an hour, with even more promised for further investment, are being circulated. Fraudsters have given this method the name 'ice fishing.'

Reports are reaching police of people losing their money after trusting a familiar face and clicking through links. Fraudsters often get victims to download 'APK' files through links or apps not available on the official Google or Apple stores.

You are urged not to open such links if you receive them, and to stay alert. Fraud is also being seen where scammers, claiming KYC updates are underway, ask for personal details and the OTP received on your phone via WhatsApp.
