80 nations call to reopen Hormuz Strait as Iran offers seven-day ceasefire proposal

About 80 member states of the United Nations, led by Bahrain, have jointly called for the Hormuz Strait to be reopened immediately and fully.

Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani made the demand on behalf of the participating countries at a press conference in New York during the 81st General Assembly session. He said that continued obstruction of the waterway would seriously affect global trade, energy security and the economy.

According to the Bahraini foreign ministry, he also urged full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, passed in March. The joint statement expressed concern over the attack said to have been carried out by Iran, as well as Houthi activities in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb region.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a proposal to open the Hormuz Strait within seven days, subject to certain conditions, has been sent to the United States through mediators. According to Iran, the proposal is based on an understanding reached with the US in June.

Discussions are underway between American and Iranian negotiators in New York, covering both the reopening of Hormuz and the lifting of the economic blockade on Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the decision to end the war now rests with the United States. Amid the prospects of ceasefire talks, international crude oil prices fell on Friday.
