White House hosts state dinner for Xi, but summit yields no major announcements

US President Donald Trump hosted a state dinner at the White House on Thursday in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping, though no major agreement was made public from the summit talks.

Xi is on a state visit to the United States from Wednesday to Friday. Trump himself went to Joint Base Andrews to welcome Xi.

The dinner was attended by tech and business leaders including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Jensen Huang, along with executives from companies such as OpenAI, Google and Amazon. Trump showed Xi the Marine One presidential helicopter and briefed him on the new ballroom under construction at the White House.

Xi said the two countries had agreed to build a constructive relationship with strategic stability, and that artificial intelligence must remain under human control. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the trade truce between the two countries had been extended by two more months. Trump said market access had increased for American farmers and ranchers.

The two leaders discussed Taiwan, trade and artificial intelligence, though differences over Taiwan remained. The summit is scheduled to conclude on Friday with a visit to the National Archives.
