Ground cracks put Jyamire settlement at risk in Makwanpur's Bakaiya

Continuous rainfall has caused the ground to crack in the Jyamire area of Bakaiya Rural Municipality-6, Makwanpur, putting the settlement at high risk.

Since Asoj 11, land has been cracking around Thulo Jyamire, Tallo Jyamire, Morangedhap and Odharkhola. Cracks have appeared across roughly two square kilometers, and in some places the ground has subsided by up to 12 feet.

According to rural municipality vice-chair Bhakta Bahadur Khatri, nearly 80 households have been affected and eight houses have been completely destroyed. Another account puts the number of households at high risk at 80 to 85, with as many as 15 houses fully destroyed. In some cases, cracks have appeared inside the houses themselves.

Affected residents were temporarily moved to safer locations as soon as the situation was reported. One local woman said that around 1 pm on Asoj 11, when she returned home after cutting grass, the loft of her house had already cracked. With the surrounding ground cracking and houses starting to collapse, residents are facing a major crisis.
