Police briefly took into custody, and then released, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition MPs who were protesting in India on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police had stopped the India Alliance procession, which was marching from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters in New Delhi, by setting up barricades.

According to AFP, Gandhi stood near the barricade waving the Indian flag.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also taken into custody.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee joined the procession.

Protesters raised slogans such as 'Vote chor, gaddi chhod' ('Vote thief, leave the seat').

Opposition parties have been protesting since Friday, alleging that the commission has been working under the influence of Prime Minister Modi's BJP. The commission has denied the allegations, saying the voter list was amended to keep it accurate.

Commissioner Kumar has not made any public comment on the matter.
