Protests held across France on Saturday against the dire state of schools and rising inflation turned violent.

Incidents of arson, vandalism and looting occurred during the protests in various cities, including the capital Paris. More than 1,200 people were arrested in the process, while 150 police officers were injured.

According to the French government, around 550,000 people took part in the protests nationwide. The protests were initiated by students.

The nationwide demonstration came against the backdrop of a rising cost of living, as elections to choose President Emmanuel Macron's successor draw closer.
