Media Council bill under Law Ministry consultation as government moves it forward

The government has moved forward a Media Council bill that would restructure the Press Council into an autonomous regulatory body with greater authority.

The bill, prepared by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, has been sent to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs for its opinion. The Law Ministry is currently studying the proposal.

Law Minister Sobita Gautam held discussions on the bill with Home Minister Sudan Gurung and Communication and Information Technology Minister Dr Bikram Timilsina on Friday. Senior government officials and representatives from the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau also took part in the discussion.
