Journalists hold silent protest at Maitighar against arrests and police raids on media houses

At the call of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, journalists held a silent protest at Kathmandu's Maitighar Mandala on Saturday. They took part in the demonstration in the rain, demanding that press freedom be ensured.
The protest was organized against the arrest of journalists and the police crackdown at media houses. The federation's central committee had announced a silent sit-in program to protect press and expression freedom. The federation said there had been government interference in journalism.
Meanwhile, the Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) has drawn serious attention to incidents of police interference that obstructed journalists' arrests, crackdowns and the exercise of press freedom. The committee has called the police interference against journalists an attack on democracy itself.
