India's voter list row: 'Cockroach' youth movement stages Mumbai protest

India's 'Cockroach' youth movement has organized a protest in Mumbai on Friday against the disputed revision of the voter list.

The movement has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Student and civil society groups have also said they will hold a similar protest demanding the same at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The movement, which began as an online campaign, had earlier staged large protests against youth unemployment and exam paper leaks, which led to the resignation of the education minister. It has now also raised issues around the electoral process, government accountability and democratic institutions.

Pressure has been mounting on the Election Commission over the 'Special Intensive Revision' of the voter list. Opposition parties and critics have accused the list of being altered in ways that benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. The government and the Election Commission, however, have claimed there has been no irregularity.
