First detailed map of Mars soil prepared

Researchers at Australia's University of Sydney have created the first detailed system and map for classifying Mars's soil.
According to a university statement, the team analyzed data from about 800 million locations on Mars and identified roughly 2,000 soil types. The map, based on orbital observations and scientific models, shows which types of soil are found in which regions.
According to Daniel Irving, the PhD researcher who led the study, Mars's geology, mineral composition and chemical properties had already been mapped previously. The new system brings various soil properties together in a single framework, helping to understand their relationships and geographic spread.
The study classifies soil based on texture, mineral composition, pH level and layer thickness. It notes that a soil type called "Nohibareth" appears promising for crop production but cannot be farmed directly.
The map is expected to help identify suitable locations for future exploration, human settlement and food production on Mars.
