Nepali Congress is on the verge of a split after two factions began holding separate conventions.

The establishment faction has already completed its convention. The outgoing president Sher Bahadur Deuwa faction, meanwhile, is rapidly holding lower-level conventions ahead of its own separate convention scheduled for Mangsir 21 to 23.

The dispute that erupted after the Gen Z movement of Bhadra 23-24, 2082 has already divided the party in practice, though a formal declaration is still pending.

There is a dispute over the legitimacy of the special convention held by then general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma without the consent of the Central Committee formed by the 14th convention, as well as over the authority of the resulting leadership.

Nepali Congress was formed in 2006 BS through the unification of the Nepali National Congress and the Nepal Democracy Congress. The party had previously split twice before, in 2009 BS and 2059 BS. The faction that broke away in the 2059 split had named itself Nepali Congress (Democratic).
