China respects US decision to call AI 'super intelligence'

China has said it respects the US administration's decision to start referring to artificial intelligence (AI) as "super intelligence." In a statement issued Saturday, China's Foreign Ministry said it respects the terminology chosen by the United States.

President Donald Trump had announced on Tuesday that the new term would be used instead of the old one in official communications of the US administration. Artificial intelligence was a major agenda item at this week's summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.

After the talks, Trump claimed on social media that President Xi also found the new term more appropriate. He said the old name was weak and misleading, calling "super intelligence" the more accurate name. China, however, neither confirmed nor denied Trump's claim.

The statement said AI technology continues to evolve and that dialogue, exchange of experience and consensus-building among all parties are necessary. Following the summit, the two countries agreed to set up a special communication mechanism for AI-related coordination and information-sharing on emergencies.

Trump has repeatedly dismissed concerns that AI could pose serious risks to humanity, while President Xi has maintained that its development should remain under human control and responsible use.
