Dairy farmers in Dang have complained that they are not getting milk prices matching their effort and investment. Both farmers and consumers are losing out as dairies and traders buy milk cheaply from farmers and sell it expensively to consumers.

Gopal Khanal of Rampur, Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City-2, runs a cattle and buffalo farm called Green Laxmi. His farm produces more than 100 liters of milk daily. According to Khanal, about 65 liters of this is sold to dairies while the rest is delivered to households.

Farmers have demanded that an open account of the costs incurred from milk production to reaching consumers, along with the profits made, be made public. They want prices to be set using a scientific calculation of production costs, with farmer representation, and with transport costs to market also factored in.

They say farmers need an assurance of fair prices in order to increase production.
