Govt to lower water levels of 4 risky glacial lakes, spend Rs 7.5 billion on flood control

The government has decided to lower the water levels of four risky glacial lakes in order to reduce disaster risk from glacial lake outburst floods.
The plan covers four glacial lakes located in Manang, Sankhuwasabha and Solukhumbu. Alongside this, flood early-warning systems will be expanded on four major rivers.
A total of Rs 7.5 billion is set to be spent on these flood-control works.
The government has put forward this plan as the risk of glacial lake outbursts, snow avalanches and floods and landslides has been rising in the Himalayan region due to climate change.
