Nepal elected to UN Human Rights Council with highest votes

Nepal has been elected a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2027 to 2029.
In voting held at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Nepal secured 173 of the 180 votes cast in the General Assembly, the highest among countries elected from the Asia-Pacific regional group.
Nepal had previously served two consecutive terms on the council, from 2018-2020 and 2021-2023. Its third term will begin on January 1, 2027.
Nepal's Permanent Mission to the United Nations issued a statement thanking all member states that supported its candidacy, expressing gratitude for their trust in Nepal's commitment to multilateralism, human rights, international law and a UN-centered rules-based system. The mission also congratulated the other countries elected for the new term.
The same election also saw Japan, Germany, Brazil, Ireland, Ukraine, Uruguay, Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, Burundi, Jordan, Kuwait, Moldova and the Dominican Republic elected to the council.
