El Nino risks pushing up global food prices

The World Bank has forecast that a powerful El Nino could push global food prices up by about 18 percent next year.
El Nino has caused heavy rainfall in India and Nepal, while South America has faced drought. This has raised the risk of reduced production of major crops including paddy, maize and coffee.
When a cyclone that struck India's southeastern coast moved toward Nepal, it brought heavy snowfall and rain to the high mountain region. The cyclone displaced about 100,000 people in India.
In Bolivia, drought has affected about 78,000 families, prompting President Rodrigo Paz to declare a state of emergency. In Peru, meanwhile, wildfires have spread.
