Waste management bill to bring private sector into garbage collection and recycling

The government has tabled a Waste Management Bill in parliament that includes provisions to involve the private sector in garbage collection and recycling. Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal had registered the bill in the House of Representatives on September 17.

The bill aims to make waste management more systematic. Under Section 16, when a local level hands over waste management of its area to the private sector, it must select a licensed organization through competition.

Section 41 provides that any organization wishing to provide such services must obtain a license as per the laws of the concerned local level.
