Mahakali irrigation project phase three: structures ready, but canal still has no water

Kanchanpur — Although the structures needed to provide irrigation to five thousand hectares under the third phase of the Mahakali Irrigation Project have been completed, water has not yet reached the canal. The project covers the area from Brahmadev to Phuleli in Shuklaphanta Municipality.
According to Nepal Press, infrastructure worth 13 billion rupees has been built under the project. However, the basis for releasing water into the canal has still not been settled.
NHPC staff stationed in Tanakpur have been telling the project office that water will be released as soon as orders come from Delhi. The prime ministers of both countries had jointly inaugurated the project.
Even after the structures were completed, irrigation facilities have not reached the targeted areas because water has not come into the canal.
