Trump claims US-Canada trade deal will happen soon

US President Donald Trump has claimed that a trade deal with Canada will happen soon. He said this at an election rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday.

The rally was held with nine days remaining before the US midterm elections. Trump said the problem would be resolved quickly and that Canada was now ready to give anything.

He defended his tariff decisions, accusing Canada of taking unfair advantage of the United States for years. Trade talks between the two countries had collapsed last August, after which the US imposed additional tariffs on various Canadian goods.

According to AFP, those tariffs affected goods worth about $20 billion, ranging from hockey equipment to cement. In response, Canada had imposed tariffs of equal value on American products.

Trump then retaliated by raising tariffs on some goods by up to 50 percent. The White House, however, removed tariffs on some items on Friday.
